Beyond the Ferry: Exploring Washington Island

Step into a slower, more intentional way of life. This self-guided driving tour invites you to leave the mainland behind and embrace “island time,” where shipwreck stories, immigrant traditions, and quiet natural beauty shape everyday life. From rocky shorelines to forested back roads, you’ll discover how isolation fostered resilience, creativity, and a culture unlike anywhere else in Door County.

Beginning at the iconic Welcome Coffee Pot, right after you get off the ferry, the route winds past historic buildings, peaceful harbors, and hidden gems that reward curiosity. Along the way, you’ll hear stories of Danish, Norwegian, and Icelandic settlers, the ferries that connected the island to the outside world, and surprising chapters of American history tied to the island’s remote coves. You’ll visit memorable places like Stavkirke Church, Schoolhouse Beach, and Jackson Harbor, with time to explore at your own pace.

By the end of the drive, you’ll return near the ferry dock with a deeper appreciation for the landscapes, stories, and traditions that make Washington Island one of Door County’s most distinctive destinations.

The tour covers about 33 miles.
